SHS Senior Matthew MuschettCongratulations to SHS senior Matthew Muschett who recently took first place at a statewide science and technology conference for his research in solar cells.  Approximately 450 middle and high school students from throughout New York State competed.

Muschett, who interned with ARDEC-Benet Labs and worked with coaches, teachers and mentors for three months on project design and research, was coached on the project, by the lab's mentor team.

According to an article, published by the U.S. Army, ARDEC-Benet provided the hypothesis for how altering a silicon surface through laser-induced topography could be applied to photovoltaics.  "This," it said, "required Matthew to demonstrate a process to increase the efficiency of solar cells, whcih could eventually lead to lower-cost solar panels."

While Muschett won his division of the competition, the ARDEC-Benet team is most encouarged by what they took away from the process and experience of working with a high school student.

Dr. Philippe Chow, a research fellow with ARDEC-Benet Labs is quoted as saying,"the takeaway for me in regards to Matthew's internship is that as doctorate-level researchers we must learn to translate our highly technical work and jargon into terms that any audience we engage will better understand."

The article also states that ARDEC-Benet learned that being a coach, teacher and a mentor could impact the furture of Army research and science.
