Information about Regents Exams

As you may be aware, in recent weeks the United States Department of Education denied New York State’s testing waiver request. We want to share some updates about how this decision will impact Regents examinations and local final examinations at Schenectady High School and Steinmetz Career and Leadership Academy this year.

Regents Examinations

To meet the federal government’s requirements, the New York State Education Department canceled all but four of the Regents examinations previously scheduled to be administered in June 2021. Similar to June 2020, all students enrolled in and passing courses culminating with the following Regents examinations, will automatically receive an exemption designation on their transcript.

The Regents exams that are canceled for June 2021 are:

·       Global History & Geography

·       U.S. History & Government

·       Geometry

·       Algebra II

·       Chemistry

·       Physics

Four core Regents examinations will be held according to the following schedule:

·       English Language Arts – June 17

·       Living Environment – June 22

·       Algebra I – June 23

·       Earth Science – June 24

Students are NOT required to take the four Regents examinations.
All students enrolled in and passing courses culminating with one of these four Regents will automatically receive the exemption designation on their transcripts. Students can choose to take the exams if they are enrolled in these courses. However, should a student decide to take one or more of these examinations, students and their families will have the option to include the score on their transcript. Please be aware that grades on any of these four examinations will not factor into a student’s course average, per NYS guidelines. Participation in these exams will also have no impact on accountability measures for the school district.

Please let us know if your student plans to participate in one of the four Regents  exams listed above by completing the Regents Examination Sign-up Form (you can scan the QR code with your phone’s camera) by May 17, 2021 so we can plan accordingly.  If you do not complete this form, we will assume that your student will not be participating.

Final Examinations

To ensure both equity and empathy for all students, the district has cancelled final examinations for the 2020-21 school year. We believe this decision is in the best interest of our students given the current climate. It reflects the spirit of the Regents exam decisions made by the New York State Education Department to ensure as much fairness to students as possible.

Teachers have worked all year to provide a comprehensive set of both formative and summative assessments to measure each student’s progress.  They will use these assessments and other evidence of student learning, to determine the student’s final course grade in each class.  In courses linked to our College in the High School program year-end assessments will be administered if required as part of those partnership agreements.

We are proud of the efforts of our students, faculty and staff in meeting the demands of this most unusual school year and we know that they could not have accomplished so much without your continued support.

If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to us.

Sincerely,

Christopher Chank
