Members of the Schenectady High School Roots Club unveiled a special mural that is on permanent display in the school, in honor of Frida Kahlo, one of Mexico's greatest artists who painted butterflies and other elements in the natural environment.
The painting is symbolic as it includes the Monarch butterfly representing the wholeness of North American because it flies through Canada, the United States and Mexico. The milkweed represents the habitat that is needed to preserve for the butterflies and humans to thrive. The milkweed seeds become the students’ names standing for the next generation with hope that they will spread understanding, respect and love.
The Roots Club includes 26 students, most of whom contributed to the mural. The club is open to all students in Schenectady High School. Its purpose is for students to learn more about and appreciate the history, culture and contributions of the African diaspora. Students also develop skills to recognize and advocate against racism through projects, performances and discussions.
